The Fun in NYC

What do i think of NYC?
its peaceful and fun
their parks are enjoyable
you hear children playing with
their friends
you feel like your one with the wind
as you swing higher and higher
there are passageways that always surprise you
when you enter this place
you feel welcome and happy
this place can be peaceful and quiet
when the warm breeze flow
the branches follow
families come by this place
and you feel warm
it opens your mind if you’re having
problems
you lick the flavor of ice cream
as it satisfies your taste buds
this place is my cheerful place
that i will always feel comfortable.

Beware of the 9th Grader’s Dilemmas

As a Freshman, in Frank McCourt High School, you will be faced with situations, where you will have to make a decision. Are you going to become a procrastinator and be unprepared? Or are you going to make your assignments your priority and complete all your school work? Before you make a decision, you have to make sure you have the successful strategies to avoid the traps of becoming a procrastinator or unprepared. To help us find these strategies, we read essays by 10th grader and we found out that the sophomores faced this situation. We also, interviewed the tenth graders and discovered their dilemma was unorganization and procrastination. They used different strategies to help them overcome these bad qualities.

Procrastination will be your downfall in high school. According to Chelsea Perez, a tenth grader at Frank McCourt High School, she wrote an essay titled, “Add Title Here Later,” where she shares her battle of good vs. evil (procrastinating). Chelsea would wake up 4’oclock in the morning to complete her assignments. She also shared her story, when she relaxed all weekend knowing she had a lot of homework. She was constantly thinking about the assignments, but she didn’t start the assignments until Sunday at 5 pm. Chelsea always told herself to do her work later, but instead she waited to the last minute to do all of her homework. She felt stressed and tired because she was overwhelmed with her assignments. Chelsea blamed herself for not completing her work earlier, instead she chose to complete her work at the last minute. She found a remedy to her situation, she decided to complete her assignments before the last minute. Procrastination will be the breaking point in any ones situation when it comes to homework. When you face the battle of good vs. evil (procrastination), complete your assignments earlier, so good will be victorious!

When you face the next situation while in high school, being prepared, are you ready to face the task? David Greenman story, “ If I Knew Then What I Know Now,” talked about how he felt in this struggle. At first he kept making excuses for his failing grades, he blamed his teachers and stated, “the Board of Education was lousy”. David also thought that he had more time to improve his grades, but he realized that High School had two more marking periods, which didn’t allow that much time for him to pick up his grades. David felt angry, confused, disoriented, and he was constantly thinking of excuses and lies. David was unprepared as he entered Frank McCourt High School. When David realized how his grades were going under, he started to get prepared. He went from failing Spanish to getting a 98 by the end of the marking period. David started a new leaf in tenth grade by being prepared. He made sure his homework was completed and he checked it to make sure it was correct. David also put homework first, every night he packed up his work for school to made sure he was prepared, that was a few of his strategies. David warns all ninth graders to always be prepared for high school. Being prepared will make High School life a lot easier. This story is a wake up call for all ninth graders in Frank McCourt.

There are some situations in life that we can surpass. . Chelsea Perez was interviewed about her experience in high school and her situation was being disorganized and procrastinating. She felt stressed, frustrated, and distracted because of procrastinating and being unorganized. On weekends when she tried to do her work she always got distracted by the T.V. Chelsea blamed herself for always waiting until the last minute to complete her assignments. She didn’t let that bring her down, instead of feeling more depressed, she battled her procrastination. Chelsea thought of helpful strategies to break her habit. She decided to do her homework before the day the assignment is due, she also used binders and folders to organize her work. She felt organized and relieved that she conquered her habit. What Chelsea was telling us to make your work your priority. Their maybe bumps in the road , but you will surpass them as you keep moving forward. For all ninth graders in Frank McCourt High School, Chelsea has taught us how to conquer our situation so it wont affect our future.

Frank McCourt freshmen’s have the keys to unlock the secrets to become a successful student. David Greenman, a tenth grader at Frank McCourt H.S., taught us how to be prepared for high school. He put his homework first, he made sure it was completed and every night he packed up his work for school. David also taught us to work hard and always do our best in school because waiting to the next semester to improve your grades maybe to late. David made this mistake by being unprepared, and it caused him to fail his class because he had incomplete assignments. The other key to becoming a successful student was to avoid procrastination, which Chelsea Perez, a tenth grader at Frank McCourt High School, informed us. She taught us how to overcome this situation by completing her work earlier. She procrastinated on her assignments because she was distracted by the T.V. The common trend, between Chelsea and David, was frustration and stress because they weren’t focused on their assignments. After interviewing Chelsea, she gave advice on how to conquer procrastination, she used binders and folders to organize her work. The strategies provided by these resources, has taught us to make your work your priority, be organized, and be mindful to always do your best in all your classes. Frank McCourt freshmen’s are now able to apply these keys to avoid the traps of becoming a procrastinator or unprepared students. Success will be yours!

Reflection
Reflection

The three pieces I’ve chosen were my blind contour drawing, my poem, and my essay, “Beware of 9th Grade”. I selected my contour drawing because It showed the skills I learned from media and how primary colors represented the image of my theme. I chose my poem, “Fun in NYC,” because it expressed my thoughts and feelings about a place that reflected positive childhood memories of living in New York. I selected my essay as my final piece because it talked about surviving High School and it taught me that I can improve my writing to another level.

If I had additional time, I would have worked more on my essay because I would have added more details and evidence. I was stuck on writing my poem. I ended up getting stuck on the middle part of the poem when I was creating my poem. I got unstuck when I started thinking about the image of the place I chose and the idea came to me and I started writing again.

The one thing I have to work on is mostly my artwork because I wanted to be more detailed with the line techniques and placing the primary colors of the drawing.

This portfolio reveals me as a writer because I’m able to express my feelings. I always articulate my feelings in my work when I draw or write a story.
